Residents in Hull, England, are expressing concerns over smoky conditions and a strong odor following a fire on the cargo ship Altay, docked at Albert Dock. Several businesses in the city center have closed, and police have restricted access to certain roads, advising motorists to exercise caution.

Humberside Fire and Rescue deployed four engines and a ladder platform to tackle the fire, which is believed to have started in the ship’s cargo hold. Ambulances and the Hull Coastguard Rescue Team are also present at the scene. The fire service has urged residents to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid the area near the dock due to smoke drifting into the city center.

The Altay, a small dry bulk cargo ship registered in the Marshall Islands, arrived from Ijmuiden, Netherlands, on June 23. It is transporting scrap metal, and all crew members have been accounted for with no reported injuries. The ship has a history of deficiencies noted during a previous inspection in Venice, Italy, but received a clean report after a subsequent inspection in Boulogne, France.
