South Korea Achieves World First with Green Methanol Supply at Ulsan Port

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Ulsan Port Authority in South Korea have achieved a world first by successfully completing a ship-to-ship (STS) green methanol supply to a very large container ship at Ulsan Port. This accomplishment is significant in the global competition among ports for the methanol fuel market and is expected to strengthen Korea’s position as a sustainable marine fuelling location and promote the growth of the country’s sustainable marine fuelling industry.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries established the necessary institutional foundation and accumulated know-how through previous methanol supply demonstrations with Ulsan Port Authority. The success of this latest demonstration is expected to further solidify Korean ports’ position in the world and contribute to the growth of the sustainable marine fuelling industry. The ministry and Ulsan Port Authority will continue to work on upgrading related systems and collaborating with the private sector to secure sustainable marine fuel supply economics.

Minister Kang Do-Hyung emphasized the importance of achieving net-zero by 2050 in the global shipping sector and stated that efforts will be made to strengthen Korea’s competitiveness in sustainable fuels. President Kim Jae-gyun of Ulsan Port Authority expressed the port’s commitment to proactively responding to the paradigm shift in ship fuel and striving to become a hub port for sustainable marine fuel supply.
