The US Coast Guard (USCG) Captain of the Port of San Juan has issued a warning to the maritime community in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as Tropical Storm Lee approaches. The USCG has initiated Port Condition WHISKEY, which allows port facilities to remain open to commercial traffic and transfer operations to continue. However, pleasure craft are advised to seek safe harbor, as there are no safe havens in the facilities during this condition. Vessels that wish to remain in port must obtain approval from the Captain of the Port. If vessels cannot be moved to safe harbor, mariners are advised to secure their vessels in inland marinas to minimize vulnerability. Residents and visitors are also urged to stay away from beaches and avoid swimming due to rough sea conditions. Tropical Storm Lee is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane by Saturday.
