In early December 2023, severe cyclonic storm Michaung caused siltation in the Bay of Bengal, leading to a significant reduction in the depth of channels in the port area. To address this issue, Van Oord will use the HAM 318 drag suction dredger to dredge the harbor’s fairway back to the required depth. A total of 5 million cubic meters of material will be dredged, with the work expected to be completed by early March.
Krishnapatnam Port, India’s deepest port and one of the largest in South Asia, is now owned by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited. The company selected Van Oord for the dredging project due to their excellent past experience. Van Oord and Adani have previously collaborated on successful projects at the ports of Hazira, Dahei, and Dhamra, making them trusted partners in managing port infrastructure in the region.
The partnership between Van Oord and Adani reflects a commitment to maintaining and enhancing vital port infrastructure in India amid the challenges of the North Indian Ocean cyclone season. Their effective collaboration and successful track record demonstrate a dedication to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of Krishnapatnam Port for years to come.
