VARD, a Norwegian shipbuilder and subsidiary of Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri, has announced a contract with UK-based Purus Wind to design and build two battery-powered Hybrid Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs), with an option for two additional ships. The vessels are based on the VARD 4 19 design, which has been optimised for environmental benefits, including minimal fuel consumption and drag. Their battery hybrid system allows the ships to operate with zero emissions for extended periods and they have been developed to facilitate charging at sea.

In addition to being able to operate with methanol, the VARD 4 19 design was developed with a goal of minimal reliance on additional power sources. The project was funded by the Norwegian government’s Green Platform Initiative, demonstrating its alignment with sustainability goals. Purus Wind is committed to meeting the demands of the clean energy industry while seeking to decarbonise, and the company’s vessels reflect those aims.
