A cargo ship has run aground on the River Nene near Cambridge, blocking the narrow waterway by wedging itself diagonally into both banks. The incident has drawn public attention in the UK due to its resemblance to the Ever Given crisis, which famously blocked the Suez Canal in 2021, albeit on a smaller scale.
The bulker Baltic Arrow grounded at both the bow and stern while heading towards the port of Wisbech on Tuesday morning. Drone footage captured a tug attempting to refloat the vessel, which measures 80 meters in length. The ship was stuck due to low water levels in the river, a common occurrence given the fluctuating nature of the Nene.
Following the grounding at low tide, Baltic Arrow was successfully refloated at the next high tide with the assistance of an additional tug from Kings Lynn. Despite the dramatic scene, port officials believe the vessel sustained no damage from the soft riverbed. The ship remains moored at Wisbech as an investigation into the cause of the incident unfolds.
