Captain Anish Joseph, Deputy Nautical Adviser, issued an advisory urging seafarers to follow safety practices and precautionary measures specified in directorates circulars and guidelines. In response, Frank Viegas, President of the Goan Seamen Association of India, praised the Malacca Straits patrol and CORPAT INDOSIN for boosting security operations during high-risk periods. Viegas emphasized the importance of coastal guardians uniting to ensure safer seas and boost morale for seafarers.

The Goan Seamen Association of India had expressed concern over recent pirate attacks faced by seafarers, prompting the advisory to take concrete measures to protect those navigating through vulnerable areas. The advisory highlighted a significant incident on October 27, 2023, involving a Marshall Islands-flagged bulker in the Strait of Malacca, where the vessel’s master was injured during an armed robbery. The advisory also noted a sharp increase in maritime security incidents in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, with a peak of 83 incidents in 2023, including two armed robbery incidents resulting in theft.
