The CEO of the yacht manufacturer responsible for the shipwreck that claimed the lives of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others attributed the tragedy to a series of errors made by the crew. The British-flagged superyacht, Bayesian, capsized and sank off the coast of northern Sicily after being hit by a pre-dawn storm. The CEO, Giovanni Costantino, described the errors as “indescribable” and “unreasonable,” emphasizing that the boat went down due to taking on water, although the exact source is still under investigation.
Costantino, who heads The Italian Sea Group, including Perini Navi which built the Bayesian, ruled out any design or construction flaws, citing the vessel’s 16 years of trouble-free navigation. He placed the blame on the crew for not adequately preparing for the storm, which had been forecasted. Correct procedures, such as summoning passengers to safety and securing the boat, could have prevented the tragedy and allowed for a safe continuation of the cruise.
Tragically, six out of the 12 passengers on board lost their lives, with one still missing. Costantino emphasized that had the crew followed proper protocols, the passengers could have safely weathered the storm and continued their journey. Italian prosecutors are investigating the incident, and a press conference is scheduled for further details. The captain and crew members of the sunken yacht have not publicly commented on the disaster, while another nearby yacht managed to escape unscathed.
