The Indian Navy, backed by the Indian Air Force, has freed the hijacked Iranian fishing vessel Azini in the Arabian Sea, more than 3,000 km from Mumbai. Pirates seized the boat on 29 October off Puntland in north-eastern Somalia, raising fears it would be used as a mothership.
On May 14, the cargo ship MSV Salaamath sank in the Arabian Sea, about 60 to 70 nautical miles from Mangaluru, Karnataka. The vessel, carrying cement and supplies to Kadmat Island, began taking on water around 5:30 AM IST. All six crew members were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard.
