Chennai Port is set to unveil its upgraded cruise terminal following a ₹29.8 crore modernization project. Under the Cruise Bharat Mission, the terminal’s capacity has increased from 1,000 to 1,800 passengers. Key improvements include enhanced immigration facilities, modernized interiors, and dedicated customs areas, positioning Chennai as a key cruise tourism hub.
On January 27, Vijay Kumar, IAS, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, visited Chennai Port to review operations and development aligned with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. He inaugurated infrastructure projects totaling ₹54.27 crore, aiming to enhance coastal connectivity and modernize port facilities for improved efficiency.
Chennai Port has reached a significant milestone by handling a record-breaking 1.66 million TEUs by February 28, surpassing its previous record. This achievement was accomplished a month ahead of schedule, demonstrating the port’s efficiency. The collaborative efforts of stakeholders have contributed to this success, showcasing the port’s commitment to excellence.
The financial year ended March 31, 2024, saw the two major ports handling a higher volume of goods, leading to increased operating profits. The CPA reported a nine percent increase to ₹1,056 crore, while KPL reported an eight percent increase to ₹1,060 crore. Both ports saw a significant rise in net surplus as well.
