The inaugural WISTA India ExCo Conference in Mumbai focused on sustainable shipping and diversity, with over 6,000 international members represented. President Elpi Petraki highlighted collaboration as key to overcoming industry challenges, while Sanjam Gupta praised India’s leadership in sustainable practices and the growing inclusion of women in maritime careers.
The NextWave Seafarers Project, led by IMO and KSA, aims to address global seafarer shortage by providing training to 20 cadets from LDCs and SIDS through Bahri Shipping Line. It aims to promote gender diversity, create a talent pipeline, and inspire similar programs worldwide. Collaboration is invited to build a resilient maritime workforce.
The recent survey on disparities within the seafarer community revealed alarming rates of psychological and sexual harassment among women and LGBTQ+ members. The lack of DEI training for senior ranks was also identified as a concern. Despite challenges, there were positive aspects, highlighting the need for a more inclusive maritime industry.
