Women in Greece are making strides in the shipping sector, comprising 7.8% of seafarers—a notable increase from previous years. This shift is driven by modern demands for skills in technology and cybersecurity, as maritime schools adapt. As a result, women’s involvement is reshaping the industry’s future and addressing workforce shortages.
The Seamen’s Pension Fund’s annual review highlights a significant 11% rise in female seafarers in Greece, totaling 2,048. Despite this growth, global figures show a decline in women’s representation in the maritime workforce from 26% in 2021 to nearly 19% in 2024. Passenger ships lead in female employment, comprising 68%.
In honor of International Day for Women in Maritime, MISC presents “Chart her course,” an immersive exhibition celebrating female seafarers. This interactive experience showcases the journeys of three Malaysian women in maritime roles, aiming to challenge stereotypes and inspire future generations. The exhibition runs May 16-18 at Muzium Telekom, Kuala Lumpur.

With women making up only 2% of the maritime workforce, this initiative aims to provide a safe space for female cadets and seafarers to seek help. Supported by Skuld, the helpline is a step towards gender equality in the industry.
The UK Department for Transport’s official statistics for seafarers in the UK Shipping Industry in 2024 revealed a total of 23,700 active UK seafarers, with a slight decrease from the previous year. The majority were male, with higher female representation among Uncertificated Officers and Ratings. The data also showed variations in nationality, gender, age, and certification.
