Ukraine is launching a pilot program for remote processing of Seafarers’ Identity Documents (SIDs) to assist maritime professionals stranded abroad due to conflict. A center in Warsaw will facilitate applications and renewals, streamlining the process and enhancing support for seafarers, while shifting responsibility to the Maritime Administration for efficiency.
A recent report from Arendal, Norway, reveals a 25% rise in deaths among seafaring workers from 2022 to 2024 compared to previous years. Notably, suicides exceeded fatal incidents in 2024. Illnesses accounted for 83% of deaths, with stress identified as a key factor, particularly affecting younger officers.
The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) reports that Indian seafarers are the most abandoned nationality, with 411 cases recorded so far in 2024. Two vessels in the UAE have all-Indian crew members abandoned in extreme conditions, highlighting the urgent need for attention to the plight of seafarers worldwide.
The Social Security System (SSS) and Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) signed an agreement to create the Maritime Industry Tripartite Council (MITC) for seafarers’ coverage. SSS President Macasaet emphasized the commitment to address maritime employment concerns and provide financial assistance to seafarers and their families. Around 350,000 seafarers are SSS members.
