Swedish hydrogen fuel cell company PowerCell has received type approval from Lloyd’s Register for its Marine System 225, delivering 225 kW of clean, vibration-free power. This modular system supports both new and retrofitted vessels, aligning with global decarbonization goals and facilitating the transition to zero-emission shipping technologies.
PowerCell Group, based in Sweden, has secured a major order for marine fuel cell systems from an Italian marine OEM manufacturer valued at approximately SEK 165 million. The order, one of the largest in the world, includes 225 units to be delivered by the end of 2025, with a focus on commercial cruise ships for auxiliary power.
PowerCell’s combined methanol reformer and fuel cell system has received Approval in Principle from Den Norske Veritas. Methanol is seen as an alternative fuel for maritime decarbonization, with PowerCell and RIX Industries creating an integrated power system solution. This strategy aims to reduce time-to-market and technical risks for marine electrification pioneers. Collaboration with industry leaders ensures efficient and safe technology for sustainable maritime operations.
