The initiative to reduce shipping emissions through wind-assisted propulsion is gaining traction, exemplified by Anemoi Marine’s installation of five rotor sails on the VLOC NSU Tubarao. This retrofit aims to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 6% to 12% annually, marking a significant step in sustainable shipping practices.
Finland’s Bluetech has partnered with INSW to develop the ‘SeaWasp’ tanker, focusing on wind propulsion while integrating with INSW’s MR fleet. Enhanced by Norsepower’s Rotor Sails, the design achieves substantial fuel savings, with projected annual reductions of 597.2 metric tons, improving efficiency by 13.5% under optimal conditions.
The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Maritime Administrator has awarded Anemoi Marine Technologies an Approval in Principle (AiP) for their Rotor Sail systems. These wind-propulsion technology harnesses the power of the wind to improve vessel energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, with installation on several RMI-flagged vessels already showing promising results.
