Daniel Hodges, a Marine Electrician Apprentice from South Hampshire College Group, has been nominated for the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award at the 2026 Maritime Solent Awards. At 22, he achieved Distinction grades during his four-year apprenticeship while commuting weekly from London to Southampton, showcasing his dedication and potential in the maritime industry.
The UK is advancing emission capture technologies at ports with a £1.1 million grant for a project combining STAX Engineering’s systems and Seabound’s carbon capture technology. Launching at the Port of Southampton, this initiative aims to capture CO2 and pollutants from docked vessels, enhancing maritime decarbonization without retrofitting ships.

The Southampton Crown Court in the UK recently handed down sentences to the master of a North Sea cargo ship and the company operating the vessel for their roles in a fatal accident in 2021. The master admitted to failing to operate the ship safely, while the company was found guilty of operating its ships unsafely.
