India’s Knowledge Marine and Engineering Works (KMEW) has secured a 15-year contract valued at INR 3.84 billion with the Visakhapatnam Port Authority. This deal involves the operation of a battery-powered tugboat, emphasizing zero-emission standards. KMEW will manage all aspects of the tugboat’s functionality, enhancing sustainable maritime practices in India.
At the Sagarmala Convention in Visakhapatnam, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the maritime sector’s readiness to face challenges, emphasizing Andhra Pradesh’s pivotal role in India’s shipbuilding ambitions. He announced key initiatives, including two Harbour Mobile Cranes and a Smart Video Surveillance Project, aimed at enhancing regional maritime infrastructure and achieving self-reliance.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the gas carrier Shivalik at Visakhapatnam Port, marking its debut under the Indian flag. Acquired by the Shipping Corporation of India, the Shivalik enhances India’s LPG logistics. Sonowal emphasized this achievement within the context of the nation’s maritime ambitions and the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched over ₹276 crore in capacity-building and modernization initiatives at Visakhapatnam Port. The event included the foundation laying of six major projects aimed at enhancing port capabilities. Key projects feature the B-Ramp and a new fishing harbor jetty, significantly benefiting local commerce and community needs.
The Visakhapatnam Port Authority is building a state-of-the-art Unified Command Control Center with advanced technologies like AI to improve operational efficiency and security. Collaborating with NSIG, the VPA aims to complete the UCCC in six months. Features include multi-spectral cameras, drones, and IoT sensors for predictive maintenance and land management.
In 2024-25, the Visakhapatnam Port Authority showcased its ability to handle large vessels like INS Vikrant and The World, setting new industry standards. Achievements included night-time berthing of M.V. Star Aspiration and berthing MV Huahine with a record draft. Infrastructure upgrades have solidified VPA’s position as a leading maritime hub in the region.
