Germany-based cruise operator Phoenix Reisen has recently upgraded its ship MS Amera to enhance efficiency and sustainability. The 205-meter vessel, with a capacity for 835 passengers, now features ABB’s Onboard DC Grid™ power system platform and shore connection, resulting in improved efficiency, safety, and reduced emissions. Amera is the first cruise ship to undergo this retrofitting with Onboard DC Grid™, following successful commissioning and sea trials.
The project involved replacing the ship’s AC system with modern DC technology, allowing for the seamless integration of energy sources and loads in a compact and lightweight setup. This upgrade ensures safer and more efficient operations, with the flexibility to integrate new low-carbon energy sources like batteries and fuel cells. Phoenix Reisen’s Founder and CEO, Johannes Zurnieden, expressed confidence in the company’s commitment to sustainable cruising through the modernization of Amera in partnership with ABB.
ABB’s shore connection system on Amera will significantly reduce emissions during port calls, with potential daily reductions of up to 35% when the ship is docked for eight hours. The onboard power setup will be managed by ABB’s PEMS™ power and energy management system, optimizing the vessel’s power resources. ABB Marine & Ports Head of Marine Service and Digital, Tomas Arhippainen, highlighted the milestone project as a significant step towards electrification in the cruise industry, emphasizing the benefits of increased efficiency and safety for both newbuild and existing vessels.
