Anemoi Marine Technologies has received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Maritime Administrator for their Rotor Sail systems. These wind-propulsion systems, also known as “Flettner” rotors, are vertical cylinders that harness wind power to provide additional forward thrust to vessels, improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
The AiP was issued after a comprehensive review of two bespoke configurations of the Rotor Sail technology on a 210,000 deadweight ton (DWT) bulk carrier. The review included a technical assessment of how the installation of Rotor Sails will impact the vessel’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) calculations, with an estimated improvement of 20% for one configuration and 17% for the other.
Anemoi’s Rotor Sails have already been installed on RMI flagged vessels, with plans for further installations on a bulk carrier and a very large ore carrier. Ship owners are increasingly turning to Rotor Sails as an energy-saving technology to meet international emission reduction targets. The installation of Rotor Sails is expected to save fuel and reduce emissions, contributing to the decarbonization efforts in the shipping industry.
The RMI Maritime Administrator has expressed its support for Anemoi’s Rotor Sail technology, emphasizing the positive impact of wind propulsion on vessel efficiency and decarbonization. Anemoi’s CEO looks forward to a close and long-standing relationship with the RMI as they continue to work together to boost decarbonization efforts in shipping.
