The maritime sector is set for a digital upgrade with the launch of SATMAR, a 6U nanosatellite by Alen Space, scheduled for June 21 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This initiative, backed by Spain’s Ports 4.0 program and developed in collaboration with Egatel, aims to validate the VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), which is expected to replace the current Automatic Identification System (AIS).

SATMAR will function as an orbital platform to test VDES applications over Spanish waters, focusing on improving data transfer efficiency and enhancing maritime safety and sustainability. Collaborations with the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras and companies like Oritia and Boreas will facilitate testing of various functionalities, including encrypted messaging and accurate vessel predictions.

Guillermo Lamelas, CEO of Alen Space, emphasized the mission’s global significance, noting that VDES could revolutionize maritime communications. Additionally, SATMAR will carry a secondary payload for spectrum analysis, enabling high-speed communication experiments and monitoring radio frequency interference across multiple bands. This project builds on the SHIPMATE initiative, reflecting a commitment to advancing digitalization in maritime operations.
