ClassNK has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) for Samsung Heavy Industries’ Autonomous Navigation Assistance System (SAS). This system, partially autonomous, provides situational awareness, collision and grounding risk assessment, and avoidance through sensor fusion and electronic navigational chart information. ClassNK is actively involved in demonstration projects and is dedicated to developing safety standards to support the advancement and implementation of automated/autonomous operation technologies.
In line with this commitment, ClassNK has released its ‘Guidelines for Automated/Autonomous Operation of ships’, outlining requirements for various stages of technology development and operation. The safety review of Samsung’s SAS was conducted based on these guidelines, ensuring compliance with tasks to be automated and backup systems. Following confirmation of compliance, ClassNK issued the AiP and is currently evaluating SAS for Technology Qualification (TQ) according to the relevant guidelines.
Moving forward, ClassNK will continue to enhance the regulatory framework for automated/autonomous operation technologies. By providing standards for advanced initiatives and technological verification, ClassNK aims to improve the environment for the utilization of these innovative technologies in the maritime industry.
