Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has launched a new educational programme called BSM Smart Academy in collaboration with maritime universities worldwide. The goal of the program is to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical training for future seafarers. With a looming shortage of skilled labor in the maritime sector, particularly at sea, BSM is taking a proactive approach to address this challenge and ensure a steady supply of highly skilled seafarers.
The BSM Smart Academy offers nautical, technical, and electrical undergraduates from participating universities the opportunity to become designated BSM cadets after their first year. This allows students to receive practical training aligned with industry standards in addition to their academic education. The program focuses on developing behavioral competencies and preparing cadets for the digitalized maritime work environment, ensuring they are fully equipped to handle the challenges of their future roles both at sea and onshore.
BSM’s investment in crew education, training, and development through initiatives like the Smart Academy program aims to reduce the crewing shortage over time and uphold industry safety standards. The company plans to collaborate with maritime universities across Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and potentially South America, recruiting up to 100 students in the first year with plans to expand the global partner network. The program is part of BSM’s commitment to recruitment and retention efforts to secure a skilled workforce for the maritime industry.
