The International Maritime Organization’s World Maritime Day for 2024 has begun with the theme “Navigating the future: safety first!” The annual event, held on 26 September, focuses on the challenges faced by the global maritime industry. The IMO is organizing special events to mark the day, including lighting up landmarks in member states. This year’s theme emphasizes the IMO’s efforts to enhance maritime safety and security, protect the marine environment, and keep pace with technological advancements.
As part of World Maritime Day, the IMO will host the second WMO-IMO Symposium with the World Meteorological Organization on extreme maritime weather. The aim is to find solutions to minimize risks from extreme weather events. Additionally, 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974, a crucial IMO treaty for maritime safety. AMSA CEO Mick Kinley highlighted the importance of safety in the maritime sector, especially with 99% of Australia’s international trade being carried by ships.
Australia is committed to working with other nations at the IMO to develop high safety standards and ensure new technologies enhance the shipping industry’s safety and security. In collaboration with Lighthouses of Australia, AMSA aims to promote World Maritime Day by illuminating maritime sites, including lighthouses along Australia’s east coast. Lighthouses represent strength and guidance for mariners, symbolizing resilience and steadfastness in navigating new eras of maritime safety. The WMO-IMO Symposium, focusing on “Bridging the Knowledge Gap Towards Safer Shipping,” will conclude at the IMO headquarters in London.
