Angela Chao, CEO of Foremost Group, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of pioneering leadership in the shipping industry. She was described as a formidable executive and a strong advocate for environmentally sustainable business practices. Chao held various roles at Foremost Group, including implementing the company’s safety management system and working on ship operations and management. She was also an experienced industry speaker and served on the boards of several maritime organizations.
Chao’s impact extended beyond her role at Foremost Group, as she was also a board member of the American Bureau of Shipping Council and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s International Maritime Business Department Advisory Board. She was known for her leadership, particularly for women in shipping, philanthropy, and the arts. Chao was a Harvard graduate and her case study on “Ocean Carriers” remains part of the required curriculum for first-year Harvard Business School students. Her father, Dr. James SC Chao, is the founder and honorary chairman of Foremost Group.
