The US Eagle Bulk Shipping ship, M/V Gibraltar Eagle, was hit by a missile in the Gulf of Aden, with the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirming that a missile hit the port side of the ship from an altitude of about 95 nautical miles southeast of Aden, Yemen. US Central Command has confirmed that the ship was hit by an anti-ship missile fired from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, but the ship reported no injuries or significant damage and is continuing its journey. The ship is a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier owned by US-based Eagle Bulk Shipping, and the incident follows another failed rocket launch by the Houthis.
Eagle Bulk Shipping stated that the missile attack caused limited damage to a cargo hold, but the vessel is stable and continuing its journey, carrying a load of steel products. The Houthi group claimed responsibility for hitting an “American ship” and declared American and British ships and warships as “enemy targets.” The incident occurred near a location where another vessel reported a missile landing in nearby waters and is part of a series of attacks by the Iranian-backed Houthis on ships in the region.
The attack comes after US and British military strikes on several targets in Yemen, as well as previous unsuccessful rocket attempts by the Houthis. The situation in the Gulf of Aden has been further complicated by the presence of an Iranian spy ship, increasing the risk of attacks in the region and raising concerns about potential targeting data being provided to the Houthis. Eagle Bulk Shipping is one of the largest owner-operators in the medium-sized bulk carrier segment and is now facing the threat of retaliation from the Houthis.
