Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has expanded its liquid cargo handling capacity by introducing two new liquid cargo berths, named Liquid Berth-3 and Liquid Berth-4. This expansion was done as part of a public-private partnership (PPP) and was aimed at meeting the increased demand for liquid cargo handling at the port. JNPA currently manages about 6.5 million tonnes of liquid cargo per year through its existing berths, Liquid Berth-1 and Liquid Berth-2.
The ALCB project was developed at a cost of Rs. 225 Crores in EPC mode, using internal funds. M/s JSW Infrastructure Limited emerged as the best bidder to operate the additional berths, with a quoted royalty of Rs. 252 per tonne. The MoU was awarded to the company on February 19, 2024, and the Concession Agreement was signed on April 8, 2024. JNPA Chairman, Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, stated that the expansion was a strategic move to improve operational efficiency and meet growing demand.
The expansion of liquid cargo handling capacity at JNPA is expected to reduce waiting times for vessels, address issues related to vessel queues, and decrease demurrage costs. The new berths are designed to accommodate larger ships with larger package sizes, which will attract new customers and increase cargo volumes. With the ability to handle two vessels simultaneously, the new berths offer optimized berth options and higher throughput, leading to increased revenue for JNPA.
