The Federal Government has made a commitment to implement all International Labour Organization (ILO) instruments that have been ratified by Nigeria. The Minister for Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, along with the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration, have pledged to ensure the safe marine environment and the domestication of ILO instruments. This commitment was made during the 2024 Day of the Seafarers celebration held in Lagos.
The focus of the pledge is on ensuring the safety and security of seafarers, as well as the protection of the marine environment. By domesticating the ILO instruments, Nigeria aims to align its maritime regulations with international standards. This move is expected to enhance the overall maritime industry in the country and contribute to a safer and more sustainable marine environment.
The event in Lagos brought together key stakeholders in the maritime sector, including government officials and industry leaders. The commitment to safe marine practices and the domestication of ILO instruments reflects the government’s dedication to improving the maritime industry in Nigeria. By working towards these goals, Nigeria aims to create a more secure and environmentally friendly maritime sector for the benefit of all stakeholders.
