South Korean shipping company HMM has announced the delivery of the HMM Garnet, the first in a series of twelve 13,000 TEU container ships. The vessel, equipped with advanced energy-saving technologies and LNG-capable, was unveiled at a naming ceremony at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ headquarters in Ulsan, Korea. The new container ships are environmentally friendly and equipped with the latest smart ship solutions, transmitting real-time operational data to HMM’s fleet control center.
HMM signed a contract with Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to build six vessels each in June 2021. The company’s president and CEO, Kim Kyung Bae, expects the new ships to provide a strong environmental footprint, capacity, and flexibility in the face of growing competition in the global market. HMM Garnet will be used on the East Coast 1 (EC1) route as part of HMM’s participation in THE Alliance, including ports from Kaohsiung, Xiamen, Yantian, Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan to New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, and Singapore.
After the delivery of all twelve 13,000 TEU vessels this year, HMM’s fleet capacity will reach a total of 1 million TEU. The large container ships will make up 80% of HMM’s total fleet, increasing the cost structure and operational efficiency. Furthermore, the vessels will bear the names of birthstones from January to December, symbolizing the company’s commitment to treating its customers’ cargo with the same value as precious jewels.
