Hapag-Lloyd has become the first container shipping company to introduce real-time container tracking across the majority of its fleet of nearly 3 million, offering customers the ability to track their shipments from origin to destination with the new “Live Position” feature. The company has already equipped over two-thirds of its dry container fleet with tracking devices, with full coverage expected by summer. This initiative aims to improve decision-making, risk mitigation, and fleet management for customers.
The goal of Hapag-Lloyd is to equip all standard shipping containers with real-time monitoring, with installations beginning in April 2022. The IoT devices installed on containers provide real-time data such as GPS-based location and temperature measurements, with plans to eventually predict estimated time of arrival. The company is working on integrating tracking data into customers’ operating systems via API for easier access and utilization.
In 2019, Hapag-Lloyd started real-time monitoring of its refrigerated container fleet and now plans to extend this to standard shipping containers by 2023, tracking the entire dry container fleet by the end of 2023. The company has partnered with Nexxiot AG and ORBCOMM to provide the tracking devices, aiming to address customer concerns and improve overall shipping efficiency.
