The Adani Group’s Vizhinjam Port, located near the popular Kovalam beach in Kerala, is set to welcome its first mothership on July 12, marking a significant milestone after completing the first phase of India’s first exclusive trans-shipment port. Divya S. Iyer, the Managing Director of the port, confirmed the arrival of the mothership, stating that all preparations are in place for the event. The inauguration ceremony is expected to be attended by Union Ministers, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and other dignitaries.
Kerala Port Minister V.N. Vasavan informed the State Assembly that full-scale commercial operations at the port are expected to begin before the end of the year. Vizhinjam Port will not only be India’s first exclusive trans-shipment port but also the country’s first semi-automated container terminal. Additionally, the port aims to become a leading bunkering hub globally, supplying eco-friendly fuels like hydrogen and ammonia.
With a natural draft of 18 meters, Vizhinjam Port is capable of accommodating some of the largest container vessels in the world. Positioned strategically just 10 nautical miles from the international shipping route connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East, the port is expected to enhance Kerala’s reputation for environmental consciousness. Upon completion, Vizhinjam Port is poised to be one of the most environmentally friendly ports globally.
