Goan seafarers marked World Maritime Day by emphasizing the importance of insurance coverage for seamen both at sea and on land. The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) called for measures to protect the welfare of seafarers, especially retired individuals who often face neglect in their old age. GSAI President Frank Viegas highlighted the significant role of seafarers in driving the world economy through the shipping sector, urging stakeholders in the maritime industry to prioritize the interests of seafarers.
Viegas stressed the need for insurance coverage for seafarers during their time off shore, emphasizing that current policies do not provide financial support for seamen or their families in such situations. He urged international maritime organizations, government bodies, and trade unions to address this gap and ensure comprehensive insurance coverage for seafarers. Viegas also called on Goans holding influential positions in the shipping sector to support their fellow community members in securing employment opportunities.
GSAI founder-president Dixon Vaz emphasized the importance of unity among seafarers in facing future challenges. Reflecting on the association’s 15-year history of advocating for seamen and their families, Vaz highlighted the progress made in addressing key issues affecting the seafaring community. Both Viegas and Vaz, now serving as village Panchayat leaders, emphasized their commitment to serving the people and improving the welfare of their communities.
