In a recent incident in Ukraine’s Odesa region, two Azerbaijani crew members lost their lives, and two others were injured after a Russian attack targeted a foreign-flagged tugboat named Tedy. Ukrainian authorities confirmed the attack occurred on September 9, 2026. The victims, both Azerbaijani citizens, were part of the crew on the tugboat, with the injured members receiving medical attention at a local hospital. Six additional crew members were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry also reported that two of its nationals were killed in a separate drone strike on a cargo ship in the Black Sea, with additional injuries reported. Ukrainian officials emphasized that these attacks pose a significant threat to both Ukrainian and international maritime personnel, amid ongoing combat that is disrupting shipping and facilities essential for grain and commodity exports.
As tensions escalate, Ukraine has lodged a complaint with the International Maritime Organization regarding the increasing frequency of assaults in the Black Sea, which jeopardizes the operational safety of the country’s maritime corridor. Simultaneously, Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that its military targeted a facility in the Odesa port linked to Western military supplies sent to Ukrainian forces, further intensifying the conflict’s impact on maritime activities.
