The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) recently awarded Hapag-Lloyd a tender for ocean shipping services from Singapore to Rotterdam, marking a collective effort by leading consumer and manufacturing companies to drive decarbonization in the shipping industry. Under the agreement, brands like Amazon, Nike, and Patagonia agreed to purchase over one billion TEU miles on this route in 2025 and 2026, with Hapag providing a waste-based biomethane service to achieve a 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
ZEMBA and Hapag will use a book and claim system to verify and allocate the environmental attributes of the biomethane shipping service, working with organizations like the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping to develop a best-in-class system. The initiative aims to avoid 82,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions over the two-year agreement period, with plans for future tenders focused on maritime e-fuels to further reduce emissions.
The consortium launched a request for zero-emission shipping services in 2023, with a focus on e-fuels and nonbiological fuels entering the market by 2027. ZEMBA plans to develop e-fuel infrastructure, bunkering, and ship design in collaboration with industry participants, aiming to inform global maritime decarbonization policy through their tender process. The initiative highlights the importance of partnerships like ZEMBA in pushing the boundaries of what is possible for decarbonizing the shipping industry.
