Yemen’s Houthi group announced an attack on the MSC Darwin Ship in the Gulf of Aden, as they resumed attacks on commercial vessels in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza war. The group also launched ballistic and cruise missiles at targets in the Israeli city of Eilat. The ship, which flies the Liberian flag and was traveling between Aden and Djibouti, was reportedly in the area of the attack.
MSC, the operator of the ship, has not yet commented on the incident. The Houthis have targeted over 50 ships since November, with one vessel seized and another sunk. U.S.-led airstrikes and decreased merchant shipping in the region had led to a slowdown in attacks, but the recent incident marks a resumption of hostilities.
Earlier reports of an explosion near the Yemeni port of Aden were confirmed by the UK Maritime Trade Operations, which stated that the crew and ship were safe with military support. The situation remains tense in the region, with ongoing conflicts and attacks affecting commercial shipping routes.
