The Indian Coast Guard rescued 14 crew members from the bulker JSW Raigad, which drifted aground off the coast of Mumbai in rough weather. The distress call was made on Thursday when the vessel dragged anchor and grounded about two nautical miles off Kolaba Fort. Due to rocky terrain and rough conditions, the response boats were unable to reach the ship initially.

According to a spokesperson for operator JSW, the bulker went adrift due to strong winds and low visibility, causing no casualties and maintaining the crew’s safety on board. The following morning, the Indian Coast Guard reported flooding in the engine room of the Raigad and sent a helicopter to evacuate the crew. Despite extreme sea conditions, all crew members were safely flown to the beach.

JSW Raigad is a 2017-built freighter with a capacity of 8,000 dwt and a history of domestic trade. JSW is a major conglomerate in India with interests in various industries, including steel, energy, port operations, cement, and real estate. Nearly two dozen IMO-registered vessels are affiliated with JSW, showcasing the company’s presence in the maritime sector.
