A video capturing a dramatic collision off the coast of Queensland, Australia, in July 2024 has surfaced. The incident involved the LNG-fueled bulk carrier HL Eco, which lost power during anchoring maneuvers and collided with the Japanese bulk carrier YM Serenity. Footage from the incident shows the HL Eco’s LNG fuel tank disintegrating on impact, but fortunately, there was no explosion as the tanks were empty at the time of the collision.

The collision, which occurred during an anchoring maneuver in Hay Point, was caught on video from the YM Serenity. The footage shows the bow of the HL Eco hitting the port side of the YM Serenity, resulting in significant damage to both ships, including the destruction of an LNG fuel tank and the loss of one of the YM Serenity’s anchor. Both ships were in ballast at the time of the incident, and it was reported to the VTS of MSQ Hay Point immediately following the collision.

The incident highlights the dangers of maritime operations and the importance of proper maneuvering to prevent accidents. Despite the significant damage caused by the collision, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities. The video serves as a reminder of the risks involved in shipping operations and the need for strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
