The 20th Maritime State Development Council (MSDC) in Goa marked the launch of the Indian Maritime Centre (IMC), a policy think tank aimed at uniting maritime stakeholders for innovation, knowledge sharing, and strategic planning. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the sector’s growth under PM Modi’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of the state and port ranking systems discussed at the council.

With over 50 non-major ports handling more than 50% of India’s annual cargo, Sonowal emphasized their crucial role as major ports near capacity. Galathea Bay in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands has been designated a ‘major port’, while the Sagarmala programme, with 839 projects, is set for completion by 2035. To boost efficiency, the National Safety in Ports Committee (NSPC) application has been launched.

In efforts to streamline operations and foster growth, plans for a mega shipbuilding park spanning multiple states were also discussed during the MSDC meeting. These initiatives aim to promote healthy competition, performance enhancement, and sustainable practices in India’s maritime sector, positioning it for future success.
