The Captain of Ports in Panaji has signed a concessionaire agreement with Ganpat University to transform the aging Britona Maritime School, established in 1972, into the Goa Institute of Maritime Excellence. Under the public-private partnership, Ganpat University will invest Rs 15 crore to redevelop the school over 18 months, offering new maritime courses to Goan students. The state government will provide 5,000 sqm of land at Britona to Ganpat University for 30 years without incurring any costs.
The existing structures of the maritime school are over 50 years old and in need of repair, with outdated courses. Once the new building is completed, Ganpat University will offer specialized courses in seamanship, marine engineering, vessel operations, and more. The project will be overseen by the Public-Private Partnership department of the state government, ensuring that all jobs are given to Goan residents, with consideration for candidates from other states if suitable individuals are not found.
Ganpat University is required to submit a detailed project report within six months and complete construction within 18 months, including smart classrooms, workshops, simulators, and mock-ups for hands-on learning. The institute may also include additional facilities such as a business center, oceanarium, and conference facilities to generate revenue. Future courses may include shipping logistics, scuba diving, yacht crew training, and fishing trawler navigation.
