Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat business, has been selected to provide connectivity for Wärtsilä ANCS’s new floating laboratory, AHTI, as well as its shore operations. The connectivity, which includes Inmarsat Maritime’s award-winning Fleet Xpress connectivity and unlimited backup from FleetBroadband, will support data exchange for advanced technology testing and support the ship’s day-to-day operations. AHTI uses high-speed and reliable connectivity to create a seaborne environment for testing Wärtsilä ANCS’s technologies, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of commercial shipping. Through the programme, real-time insights into a vessel’s performance, energy usage, and impact on commercial shipping can be obtained.

According to Michael Christiansen, Vice President of Wärtsilä ANCS, AHTI provides a cost-effective setting for testing technologies without the risks and costs associated with full-scale sea trials. The floating laboratory relies on reliable and high-speed connectivity, making Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress an important addition on board. The multi-modal wide-area network provided by Fleet Xpress and FleetBroadband is designed to meet AHTI’s connectivity needs and handle the large amounts of data it generates.

DRYNET GmbH, one of Wärtsilä ANCS’s technology partners, is also involved in AHTI’s operations and selected Inmarsat’s connectivity solution for the ship. Holger Ritter, Managing Partner of DRYNET, explained that AHTI requires reliable and constant connectivity, which Fleet Xpress with backup from FleetBroadband provides. This connectivity package also has the capability to handle the extensive data generated by AHTI, enabling applications such as enhanced situational awareness and remote control.

Inmarsat Maritime’s Regional Sales Director, Scott Middleton, expressed pride in being chosen as the connectivity partner for a project that accelerates maritime digitalization. He also thanked their long-time collaborator and Inmarsat Service Provider, DRYNET, for their support. Overall, the partnership between Inmarsat Maritime and Wärtsilä ANCS aims to facilitate advanced technology testing and contribute to reducing the environmental impact of commercial shipping.
