ABS has recently granted approval in principle (AIP) to two new developments from Jiangnan Shipyard. The first approval was for a modern design for an ultra large ethane carrier (ULEC) equipped with the next-generation BrilliancE® II Type-B cargo containment system. This system is designed to enhance ship performance and optimize efficiency. The second AIP was awarded for Jiangnan’s patented insulation system, PnFCOMBi, which can be used for low-temperature containment systems up to -163 degrees Celsius. ABS conducted design reviews based on class and statutory requirements to ensure compliance and safety.
John McDonald, ABS President and COO, highlighted the importance of these innovations in supporting the growing demand for ethane carriers. Jiangnan’s Chief of Corporate Technology, Keyi Hu, emphasized the significant advancements of the BrilliancE® II Type-B cargo containment system in improving safety and efficiency for gas carriers. ABS and Jiangnan have a longstanding collaboration, with ABS previously awarding AIP for Jiangnan’s BrilliancE® type B cargo containment system in 2019.
ABS is a leading classification society for gas carriers with over 50 years of experience. The organization is at the forefront of promoting decarbonization and sustainability solutions in the maritime industry. These recent AIP approvals for Jiangnan’s innovative developments further demonstrate ABS’s commitment to advancing technology and safety standards in the shipping sector.
