This initiative is aimed at improving the quality management and safety of Kenya’s waterways, and is seen as a significant step towards realizing a sustainable blue economy in the country. The CS emphasized that this move will also promote regional integration and trade.

During the event, the CS urged the Kenya Maritime Authority to certify all lake users and seafarers in order to ensure the safety of operations within Kenyan waters. Additionally, he witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Kenya Railways and Utalii College, which will provide graduates with access to job opportunities in the wider marine sector, including hospitality in the cruise ship industry. This partnership is expected to create more opportunities for those seeking employment in the marine industry.

The launch of these courses and the signing of the MoU are seen as major milestones in Kenya’s efforts to develop its blue economy and expand its contribution to national development. The government is focused on improving the safety and quality of its waterways, as well as creating more job opportunities in the marine sector.
