The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has issued guidelines for implementing pilot projects using green hydrogen in the shipping sector as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These guidelines aim to replace fossil fuels and raw materials with green hydrogen and its derivatives in the shipping industry. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways will carry out these pilot projects, focusing on retrofitting existing ships for green hydrogen use and developing bunkering and refueling facilities in ports along international shipping routes.

With a budget of Rs. 115 crores by FY 2025-26, these pilot projects will create the necessary infrastructure for green hydrogen in the shipping sector, including refueling stations and distribution networks. This move is expected to lead to the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem in shipping and a reduction in production costs over time. The use of green hydrogen in the shipping sector is projected to increase in the coming years due to these initiatives.
