The newly-inducted Chancellor of the Regional Maritime University (RMU), Alhaji Fanday Turay, has pledged to enhance academic excellence and strengthen industry partnerships to solidify the university’s leadership in maritime education. At the 31st RMU Board of Governors meeting in Accra, Chancellor Turay, who also serves as the Chairman of the BoG, emphasized his commitment to supporting diversity, inclusion, and investing in learning equipment and infrastructure.
As the Sierra Leone Minister of Transport and Aviation, Mr. Turay took over the Chancellor role from Mr. Ebrima Sillah of Gambia, who served for the past two years. He highlighted the importance of fostering innovation and critical thinking among students to prepare them for success in the marine industry and creating an inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives.
During the meeting, Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Frederick Obeng Adom, emphasized the RMU’s strategic position in providing quality maritime education to empower young individuals in the maritime sector. Ghana, as the headquarters and host of RMU, remains dedicated to positioning the institution as a world-class maritime training center, with plans for modernization through a loan facility from the Korean Exim Bank. Additionally, the event included the commissioning of a new Registry Block to enhance various university services. The commitment to RMU’s growth was also reaffirmed by key maritime authorities from Liberia and the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa.
