Armed Pirates Seize Cargo Ship Off Somalia’s Coast

A cargo ship has been hijacked off the coast of Somalia, with eight armed assailants boarding the vessel and taking control, as reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident occurred roughly four nautical miles south of Mareeyo, Somalia, and was communicated by the ship’s security officer at 1136 UTC on Monday.

UKMTO confirmed that the attackers were unauthorized individuals who seized the unidentified cargo vessel. Authorities are currently investigating the situation, and ships operating in the vicinity have been warned to navigate cautiously and to report any suspicious activities.

This hijacking incident is notable given that the southwest monsoon conditions usually limit the operational capabilities of Somali pirate groups in offshore waters. A recent assessment from the Joint Maritime Information Center indicated that while rougher conditions hinder extended-range skiff operations, sheltered coastal areas still present opportunities for piracy.

As of Sunday, four merchant vessels were already being held in the region, including the product tanker Honour 25 and the general cargo ship Sward, both of which were hijacked in April. This latest event underscores the persistent piracy threat along the Somali coastline, even amid the challenging southwest monsoon season.
