On Wednesday, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman visited India, signaling a potential thaw in strained relations between the two nations. During his two-day trip, he engaged in discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, focusing on energy cooperation. Rahman expressed gratitude for recent diesel shipments and requested increased fuel and fertilizer supplies, a request Puri indicated would be considered favorably.

Bangladesh relies heavily on energy imports, which have faced disruptions due to geopolitical tensions, particularly the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. This visit marks an early diplomatic initiative from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s administration, which took office in February after a significant electoral victory.

The talks also addressed easing travel restrictions and enhancing security cooperation, with India planning to relax visa procedures for Bangladeshis in medical and business sectors. Despite historical ties and a shared border, relations soured following the flight of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India in 2024 amid protests.

Recent violence against Bangladesh’s Hindu minorities had previously led to visa suspensions and trade restrictions, but signs of reconciliation have emerged, including Indian leaders’ visits following Rahman’s election win.
