The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India’s maritime authority under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, recently celebrated its 76th anniversary, reflecting over seven decades of significant contributions to the shipping industry and seafarers. Established in 1949, the DGS has played a crucial role in shaping maritime policy, regulating shipping operations, and enhancing safety and environmental standards.
Officials emphasized the DGS’s efforts to align with global maritime conventions and accelerate the digitalization of regulatory processes, which are vital for enhancing India’s presence in international shipping. With nearly 95% of India’s external trade transported by sea, the DGS is essential to the country’s trade infrastructure.
Looking ahead, senior officials reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to building a robust maritime sector, in line with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal 2047 roadmap. The DGS aims to foster growth, ensure safety at sea, protect the marine environment, and enhance seafarer welfare, solidifying its role as the backbone of India’s maritime administration.
