The Directorate General of Shipping, led by Additional Director General Shri Sushil Mansing Khopde, held a crucial meeting to address recent incidents involving the detention and abandonment of Indian seafarers abroad. The meeting underscored DG Shipping’s dedication to ensuring the safety, dignity, and timely repatriation of Indian mariners working in international waters.
In a recent successful operation, eight Indian seafarers from the vessel Valient Roar were repatriated after their ordeal of detention. Upon their return, they attended a debriefing at DG Shipping headquarters, where they recounted their experiences and the challenges faced during their detention, providing valuable insights into the operational and legal issues at play. Similarly, seven seafarers from MT Kashi returned home thanks to coordinated efforts by the Directorate.
Additionally, in the case of Reem Akheelej, seven detained Indian seafarers were successfully brought back to India and participated in a structured debriefing session to document their experiences and identify any further support needed.
These incidents highlight the necessity for a coordinated institutional response, legal readiness, and ongoing engagement with international stakeholders to ensure the welfare of Indian seafarers. DG Shipping reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to providing timely intervention, diplomatic support, and legal assistance, emphasizing that “every seafarer matters.”
