Dhamra Port has achieved a remarkable milestone by handling 132,365 Metric Tonnes (MT) of dry bulk cargo within a single 24-hour period, showcasing its operational efficiency. This record was set during the unloading of the Cape-size vessel MV ASL OTSL2, which transported 165,283 MT of coking coal from Queensland, Australia, destined for Tata Steel.
During this operation at Berth-2, the port’s team established two national records: the highest 24-hour discharge, eclipsing the previous record of 127,867 MT set by MV Patragas, and the fastest multi-grade turnaround, with the entire cargo unloaded in just 38 hours. These achievements are particularly significant given the complexities involved in handling coking coal, a non-free-flowing commodity that complicates rapid mechanical extraction.
The MV ASL OTSL2 carried two grades of coking coal—Goonyella and PCI—requiring meticulous operational execution and careful yard planning to avoid contamination. This precision was essential for meeting Tata Steel’s stringent quality standards.
Devendra Thakar, CEO of DPCL, emphasized that this milestone reinforces Dhamra Port’s status as a key maritime gateway on India’s East Coast. He noted that the port, equipped with advanced mechanized infrastructure, is on track to reach a handling capacity of 100 MMT by 2030.
