Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, recently assessed the progress of the Indian Maritime University (IMU), noting its significant advancements in maritime education over the past 12 years. The Ministry highlighted that IMU has become one of the world’s leading maritime institutions by enhancing industry partnerships, research, and workforce development, aligning with India’s maritime aspirations.
Sonowal emphasized the transformation of IMU from a traditional classroom setting to a modern university focused on research and industry collaboration, significantly improving its academic infrastructure with state-of-the-art libraries and simulators. He pointed out that the number of patents has risen from one to seven, showcasing the university’s commitment to innovation. Additionally, IMU has integrated the National Education Policy 2020 into its curriculum, ensuring that academic programs meet industry demands.
The Minister also noted a surge in interest in maritime education, with registrations for the IMU Common Entrance Test increasing dramatically. He highlighted an 18-fold rise in female cadet enrollment, marking a significant step toward inclusivity in the maritime sector. Furthermore, IMU has expanded its industry engagement, establishing numerous domestic and international partnerships to enhance its global presence.
Looking ahead, Sonowal proposed a nationwide Maritime Skilling Fair to promote career opportunities in the maritime field. He stressed the importance of skilled human resources for India’s aspirations in shipbuilding and called for coordinated efforts among government, academia, and industry to achieve these maritime goals. The meeting included key officials, reinforcing the commitment to strengthen India’s position in global maritime education and innovation.
