On National Maritime Day, celebrated on April 5, India made significant strides in its maritime infrastructure, with a landmark announcement regarding the International Container Transshipment Port (ICTP) at Galathea Bay, Great Nicobar. The project, valued at ₹48,862 crore, received approval from the Public-Private Partnership Appraisal Committee, marking it as a key initiative to enhance India’s position in international shipping. A joint venture structure ensures that an Indian entity retains a 55% majority stake, limiting foreign influence in this strategically important project. The final step for implementation awaits cabinet approval.

Gautam Adani set an ambitious target for Adani Ports and SEZ (APSEZ) to handle one billion tonnes of cargo annually by 2030, doubling its recently achieved milestone of 500 MMT. Adani emphasized the vast potential for growth in logistics and marine services, supported by APSEZ’s extensive portfolio of domestic and international ports, logistics parks, and a robust transportation fleet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the 63rd National Maritime Day celebrations, reinforced the government’s commitment to maximizing India’s maritime capabilities, acknowledging the sector’s vital role in enhancing the economy and connectivity. Various ports commemorated the day with celebrations, recognizing seafarers’ contributions, especially amid ongoing global challenges.
